Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from very diverse backgrounds. In fact, we are one of the most diverse towns in Connecticut. But, just like all kids, my students love to learn. In my district, over 75% of students receive free or reduced-price lunch. This means that many do not have the basic supplies that we take for granted.
Like all 8th graders, my kids will test the boundaries set before them.
This professional development project is designed to help me learn how to teach and guide my students while they test these boundaries.
My Project
This project is modeled after one done previously called, Restoring our Community-One Kid at a Time. I am very excited to expand my own understanding of the Restorative Classroom model. I plan to read these books over the summer, so I can develop this safe, trusting and open environment in the coming year.
I have always been a true believer that students learn best in a classroom where they feel safe to make mistakes and have a positive relationship with not only their peers but the adults around them.
When I heard about the Restorative Classroom model, I knew I wanted to learn more.
Working with middle school students, I recognize that mistakes happen and with guidance kids can learn from their mistakes.
These books will allow me to gain a greater understanding of how to create a restorative school culture for my incoming class. They will also be available for other teachers to use throughout the year. Together we can build a growing community with healthy communication between everyone.
The highlighter and stickie tabs will help me organize my thoughts for quick reference later, so I can share the important information with others.
