Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 27 fourth-grade students attend an excellent, inner-city school where every student qualifies for a free lunch. Although it is a high-poverty school, each student strives to succeed. Parents and teachers are dedicated to students' success by making sure our school is a warm, safe place for learning.
Our school motto is, "We're getting ready for college," and my fourth graders are doing just that!
They are hard-working, wonderful kids, and I am doing my best to get them ready for the future!
My Project
My fourth graders love to read, and they work hard on building their fluency and comprehension skills! Since every classroom is made up of readers of different levels, it is often times hard to keep classroom libraries organized and stocked with appropriately leveled books. I want all of my students to be fluent readers, and I am working hard to build a library that is organized by Lexile reading levels. Every book we have in our library has a label with it's reading level, making it easier for my kids to choose books that will be comprehensible to them, and will also help them develop their reading skills.
Lately, my students have been asking for more books, so I am asking for about 40 new books.
Some are lower level books that focus on phonics skills and are beginner readers. I am also asking for box sets of books that will be suitable for the more advanced readers in my classroom. These books include Mysteries A-Z and Goosebumps, and even comic style books! These are a lot different than the beginner readers, which is also why I need a new library cart organizer with bins, making it easier for my students to go to our library and find the books they need quickly. Finally, I am asking for 2 fluency practice box sets. These are 1 minute passages that can be used by individual students or groups to practice and develop their reading fluency. They will be used daily, and will be helpful to those who are looking to build up their reading speed.
Developing a love of reading takes time! Over the years, I have seen many students progress from non readers to advanced readers, and I want to do what I can to help them do just that!
