Help me give my students books that they are interested in so that they become avid readers at both school and home. Having series of books helps them fall in love with characters and sparks a love of reading.
Our school is a Title I school where over 90% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Many of our students speak Spanish at home or are newcomers to Oakland and are still learning Spanish or another language. The library in our classroom now is small and filled with books that my students in East Oakland do not connect with.
My students are curious and passionate, and I want them to explore the world through their books.
They love to read, ask questions, and engage in discussions with their peers. I have 30 students in my classroom and barely enough to books at their just right reading levels to go around. After a class poll, our class is interested in adventure books, funny books, and books with characters that look like them. Please help us fill our library with books that are engaging and exciting.
By choosing books 4th graders love and are interested in, I am sure it will engage every student in reading during reading workshop and reading at home. Mysteries such as Goosebumps or Captain Underpants have been known to engage early readers!
Students will be able to go on adventures with their characters and learn about their characters throughout their books, which is a huge part of 4th grade curriculum.
Finding books with characters that students identify with and relate to is essential for comprehension and literacy growth.
Students will engage in fiction, mystery, and nonfiction units throughout the school year.
