Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are being exposed to college level STEAM and Engineering principles that are preparing them for a future career in STEAM and engineering fields. This includes using Solidworks CAD software, Computer Programming, 3D printing, and meeting real engineers. My students crave hands-on learning.
These students need hope.
The students themselves are in a high poverty area of with 98% on free or reduced lunch and the area has a median household income of $14,000. We were just named the most dangerous city in California as well as being labeled a Broken City by the LA Times. This is an image we must shake. We are determined to shape this city and build the leaders of tomorrow. However, the students basic needs are being barely met, but experiences that enhance their learning and the necessary supplies are not available at home. The students consistently face challenges and pressure with drugs, alcohol, and gangs. School is their refuge from this.
My Project
Students in my class are utilizing technology to better prepare them for the 21st Century and communication is vital for 21st Century learners. Currently, we have 20 very old headphones that are hard to hear, frayed, and do not possess the microphone necessary for students to record their own content such as podcasts, engineering videos, and screencastify.
We utilize technology daily in class, and this project will help students use technology by creating their own content.
This high level technology exercise requires headphones with built-in microphones. These headphones can maximize the learning potential and experience for every single student in my class.
