Do you remember listening to stories being read to you by a parent or grandparent? Many of my students have not had that experience and are starving for the opportunity to hear books read to them by a fluent reader.
I teach in a year round school with 653 students.
32% of the population receives free or reduced lunch support. 22% of our population is Limited English Proficient (LEP). 10% of the school population is identified a specific learning disabled or other health impaired. I currently have 19 students in my class: 10 girls and 9 boys. Of the 19, 12 are currently reading below grade level. All my students love books and being read to by me or other adults. Many of them come from homes where they are not read to and there are no books. Six of the students are second language learners too. This creates another added challenge for them to learn to read.
My Project
Having multiple copies of books and CDs to listen to and follow along with the text allows the students to learn how to read new words and hear what a fluent reader sounds like. It also gives the students a way to practice their reading skills independently. I will also be able to send the books and CDs home with the students to continue to practice their reading skills with their parents. The students will use the materials during our language arts center. The listening center will be used by up to 5 students at a time for 15 minute intervals. There will be 3 rotations during our language arts centers, so on a daily basis at least 15 students a day will use the materials.
This project supports the students developing reading skills.
The books and Cd's will help the students become grade level readers and develop their concept of story which will also improve their writing skills.
