Develop a Passion for Reading

Help me give my students an opportunity to read engaging, relevant, and relatable books. Two class sets will be used in a novel study about identity. The other books will appeal to my diverse group of students.

My Students

My students come from a wide variety of cultural, social, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds. Literacy is a skill that can help them overcome many of the challenges they face, but unfortunately, some do not have access to books they are interested in reading. Covid 19 has complicated matters. Many are struggling readers to begin with (and Covid made them even further behind). Having relevant and relatable books in my classroom will allow my struggling readers to find characters they can relate to, read books that will open their eyes to possibilities, and elevate their reading ability all at once.

My Project

The class sets of books--Just Mercy and Unwind--will be used for whole-class novel studies. Both of these books speak to identity, which is an area many students, particularly high school students, struggle with. The remainder of the books offer a wide variety of genres for my diverse student population. There are graphic novels as well as many popular young adult novels. These will bolster my classroom library and provide students with many choices. As students engage with books that interest them, their literacy increases and their passion for books grows.
