Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are English Language Learners in an urban school setting. They love to learn, play, and move! My classroom is literacy based and students enjoy reading, writing, songs, and listening to stories. Students face many challenges and work hard to learn how to read, write, listen to and speak English. In our school, we have ELL students from a variety of backgrounds that speak Spanish, Somali, Swahili, Arabic, Chinese, Burmese, Turkish, and Russian. Some of our ELL students are refugees or have come to the US to escape domestic violence or extreme poverty. We are in an urban school where many students are from low-income homes or public housing and all students receive free lunch. Despite these challenges, my students are smiling, happy children that are eager to learn and succeed. Thank you for your interest in my students!
My Project
My students love listening to stories read aloud! We have a listening center on the way to our classroom thanks to wonderful donors and I have some books on CD, but would love to add more variety. Having a range of fiction and nonfiction texts would be wonderful so that students can choose what is interesting for them. Listening to stories read aloud helps students develop a love of reading, comprehension and fluency. It should also help new kinder students learn to handle books appropriately and practice turning pages to follow along. My students would really enjoy some familiar titles like Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and some new books to enjoy!
