My Students

How awesome would it be to take a trip to Ancient Rome or to another planet? Students who read successfully can do this everyday! The students that our intervention team work with struggle to comprehend and enjoy the treat that avid reading affords! We need books to reach our destination: M.A.R.S!

Our students are wonderful and motivated third, forth, and fifth graders.

They have worked hard in previous years to excel in school; however, they have not responded fully to the classroom instruction in the area of reading and thus need some extra help. We work with small cooperative groups to boost their literacy skills (fluency, comprehension, vocabulary knowledge, sight word identification, and background knowledge). Our combined work - students and staff- is worth it! Successful reading can change a child's life.

My Project

The books that I have requested are primarily informational texts. The subject matter ranges from photosynthesis to Ancient Egypt to arithmetic. Our work focuses on complimenting the classroom instruction by helping build literacy skills while building background knowledge. Since these books are at the reading levels that our students are reading at, they will be able to successfully comprehend the subject matter and apply it to their classroom studies.

Feeling success in the classroom by being able to share their knowledge and connect new learnings is imperative to ensuring our students remain engaged in their learning.

As our students prepare to move to the secondary level, building their skills and knowledge base is only half the battle; confidence in their abilities is what will make the ultimate difference. We can and will do it - we need books and we need you! Please take part in making reading successful for all readers.
