Our school is close to two military bases and many of my students are the children of deployed military personnel. The school they attend is an older, urban public school in the largest city in the largest state in the United States.
My first graders are struggling to learn the basics---math, reading and science.
Nearly half of them receive services for ESL, Special Education and Indian Education (JOM). Most of my class are below grade-level but they love being in school because they love learning. Their smiles melt my heart.
All of my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch but we are not a Title I school that means that my wonderful first graders have all of the needs and few of the resources that are available to other low income children.
My Project
I have wonderful students but they are handicapped because the majority of them do not have access to technology outside of school. Our school district is caught in an economic downward spiral. We don't even have funding for school supplies and the technology we do have is aging. We do not have chromebooks in our classroom and we have to sign up to use the computers for 30 minute slots once a week. My students love technology but they rarely get to use it even though our district has online math programs they need to access on a daily basis.
Many of my students struggle with math and suffer from innumeracy and they need the tech tools that will help them become successful.
I am requesting an Acer chromebook so they can access the online math programs our district owns. My students will use this chromebook everyday for their math projects.
If my first graders are going to learn about math, money and financial literacy, they are going to need the help of donors. Our district does not have the funds for new technology but I need this computer so my students can have access to online math programs. I am excited for my students to learn the skills that will carry them through school.
