My students need 5 iPads and protective cases for access to technology in our classroom for research and beyond to help them be ready to take on the world!
Welcome to our classroom...our home away from home. As you walk in you see the 1986 edition set of encyclopedias and dictionaries carrying a 1981 copyright. Even though my bright students work hard every day, something is missing in our classroom. Current technology! We desperately need your help!
My large group of 5th grade students are amazing!
They are a diverse group of learners, including 5 English Language Learners and a heterogeneous blend of socioeconomic status, although we are a Title 1 school overall. They are inquisitive and ready to take on challenges, but we have been in budget crisis mode for most of their public school education.
My students are motivated by technology. They know that I did a teaching stint in China a few summers back and constantly mention our "lack of technology" to adequately prepare our students to compete in a global economy. These students are academically handicapped right now because of our lack of classroom technology. Our school is a neighborhood school of about 550 students. We have a fantastic principal who is caring and supportive, but definitely working within severe budgetary constraints. This project would bring some SERIOUS SMILES and MOTIVATION to an amazing group of young people - our future!
My Project
First, my students' mouths will drop open and then break into a HUGE grin when they see this new technology for our class! Each student has their own password and user name for our math program and our science program. They will be able to get on these sites and practice concepts they are struggling with. They will also use these iPads to do important research and cite the sources used within their opinion and informative writing pieces. Motivation will SKYROCKET!
Students will also be able to read books that will be downloaded onto these iPads. This will help my struggling readers by being motivated to read on the iPads AND by getting them into "just right" reading books without other students knowing the actual book they are reading. Also, learners will be able to spellcheck words, look up meanings of words along with synonyms and antonyms. My students really deserve these materials and would be honored for this project to be funded. Thank you so very much!
Even though my students have their own accounts and user names with our science and math programs, they are unable to access these learning tools at school because my school only has one computer lab.
This lab is run by an aide who teaches classes all day in it. We don't have any access to technology outside of this. This project will make a gigantic difference by bridging this gap between the technology they have at home and the technology at school. This project will help my students compete!
