My second-grade students are amazing. They are loving, fun and eager to be in school. I learn from them every day. They are typical children, but some struggle in their academics. Many come from a background that is steeped in poverty and other challenges. Despite these challenges, they have the potential to do great things.
My kids need immersion in hands-on activities and experiences to "level the playing field" and create fairness in their education.
The joy of learning is still within them in second grade. They are enthusiastic about life and still have the curiosity that learning requires. It is my responsibility to do all that is within my power to provide them with what they need.
My Project
My project includes two basic pieces of teaching equipment/materials that have not been provided by my school. I need a 100 chart rug for the kids to experience through movement. This will help them to add and subtract 10's and 1's, see patterns in skip counting by 5's, 10's and 2's.
In addition to the 120 chart rug, I need a classroom easel and tabletop easels for the children to work in groups.
The easels allow kids to work on math problems, collaboratively. It will also allow me a place to work with the whole class. It will provide for a more interactive experience for the class.
