"Great books help you understand, and they help you feel understood." -John Green
I teach 9th grade reading in a high school in the Bronx. Most of my students do not like to read; however, I've found that if you can find that one book that sparks their interest, they'll be hooked for life!
My school is a Title I high school.
We have a small class library that I add to myself when I am able, but I'd love to bring in this influx of high interest books that can help my students see that books can be fun and engaging, not just an exercise in creative torture. The kids themselves are fantastic. They're eager to learn and to grow, but many of them do not see the purpose of reading.
My Project
My students need high interest books like "The Gravel Road Series," "A Child Called It," and "The Autobiography of Lebron James." One of our big themes this year is "literature as a lens." We want to teach students that books can not only be fun and entertaining, they can also help us know ourselves better. The books we're requesting deal with issues of identity and growing up, in many cases in and through adversity. During independent reading, we want to show our students that books can be applicable and useful in teaching us how to deal with the various issues with face in coming of age today. Students will use these books in our daily independent reading sessions and for their book projects.
By donating, you will be providing my students with an invaluable opportunity to read fun, high-interest books, and to learn a little more about themselves in the process!
We strive to create a life-long love of reading in our students, and these books will help us do that.
