Ms. Lukaszewicz from Baltimore MD is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need grade-level reading comprehension workbooks so that they may dramatically improve their reading levels and take the world by storm.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I'm not just teaching 8th grade this year; I'm preparing students for success in high school, college and life, and our chances of that are greatly improved if all students can improve their reading levels. I am committed to sending all of my students to high school with functional literacy skills.
This particular project was crafted with 14 students in mind--the 8th graders who read on elementary levels.
They are charming, curious, and committed to success. Eighty percent of them qualify for free lunches and more than half of these 14 receive special education services. Their circumstances are not obstacles; rather, they are challenges that will make our inevitable success all the sweeter. Still, like all humans, my students are vulnerable to bouts of self-doubt when they feel the full weight of the task ahead of us. I want their reading ability to improve as speedily as possible, and providing them with easy-to-manage practice will help in that endeavor.
I'm requesting reading comprehension workbooks for grades 1-5 to distribute to my students so that they may have extra reading practice at home. I'm requesting double the number of workbooks, for I fully expect that my students will improve two reading levels this school year, such that students who are presently on a 3rd grade reading level will be ready for a 4th grade workbook by midyear. The books afford practice in the most important skills that we all use: main idea, summary, etc. I value discretion around reading levels, so I intend to conference with each child privately, explaining why they are receiving the book and how it will help them to become better readers.
These workbooks will empower my students to take ownership over their reading levels, skills that are sure to serve them for an entire lifetime.
Furthermore, my students are so grateful for every donation from our generous benefactors; it sends to them the message that people beyond our community are invested in their success and believe, just as I do, that they are capable of excellence.
