My Students

I work at a public high school located in the Bay Area. Its surrounding area is home to many working-­class and immigrant families of color. More than 50% of our school's population is qualified to receive Free and Reduced Lunch.

My students are joyous, hardworking, and hopeful.

Despite various challenges they face, they all have high aspirations to succeed. While I play the role of the teacher in the classroom, I learn from them and their stories of resilience every day.

My Project

School should be a place of learning and fun. To me, this implies that there should be opportunities to communicate, create, and collaborate effectively. As an educator, I structure my lesson plans with the intent that students will connect and learn from one another. While it may seem rudimentary, well-designed desks could stimulate and encourage that growth.

In my classes, students are expected to work in pairs and in groups so that they can not only improve academically, but also develop skills that they will need to be successful in the real world.

What does that mean? As a teacher, I observe and see if they are empathetic to the needs of others and offer help when needed. I check whether they recognize that every person in their group is capable of contributing to their collective success.

I chose these desks because they are large, rectangular in shape, and are parallel to the floor, which means that:

1) Students will be able to have a book, a binder, or other materials on their desk at the same time.

2) Students will be able to arrange the desks in multiple ways, depending on what will be most useful to the task. For example, they may have desks face each other for partner work, or create a square for group work.

2) Students will be able to share materials with each other more easily. The desks I currently have in my classroom are slanted up, which causes paper, pencils, and other materials to slide off easily.

3) Students will be able to check or compare their work with others because they will have visual access to whatever is on their classmate's desk.
