My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, I know my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things technologically current and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.

Students come from broken down homes, they don't need a broken down classroom.

Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our most "disadvantaged" learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.

My Project

Currently my students have mix matched and faulty desks. I have to keep a wrench in my desk to tighten bolts after they loosen and the desks fall down on my students laps. Some desks don't stand tall enough for my middle schoolers' legs to fit underneath comfortably and are forced to "ride side saddle." The population I teach already has uncomfortable and broken down home lives, they need a learning environment that functions and minimizes their distractions. In order to provide the best learning environment and atmosphere to my students, we need to start with the basics: the furniture they come to everyday. I am requesting rectangle activity tables.
