Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Tagalog, Urdu, Turkish, and Spanish are some of the many languages spoken by the children in my classroom. Our school is a Title I, inner-city school, where 90% of the children receive free or reduced-price lunch. My children are extremely eager to learn and are very appreciative of everything that is given to them. They love coming to school and are excited to begin each day.
My students face many challenges in their daily lives.
Having the necessary materials to learn should not be one of them. The only way I can ensure my children are successful in their educational journey is to provide these tools to them.
My Project
The student desks I currently have in my classroom are from the 1970s. Most of them are missing the bottom part of one or more of their legs. This makes them wobble and bang as the children work. We have folded up paper stuffed and duct taped underneath to level them off. Some desks even give the children splinters. I have sandpaper handy and have even resorted to putting contact paper on the top to prevent splinters. Some desks cannot be moved or the entire leg will fall off. The desks are all of varying heights and it makes it difficult to make cooperative learning groups.
My children deserve much better than the desks they currently have in their learning environment.
I have 26 children and semi-decent chairs. I am starting out by ordering six desks due to the cost and can hopefully add over time.
Thank you so much for your consideration in funding this project.
