Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Special Education Advanced Algebra and Geometry teacher. My students are in high school and are from low income families. We are located in a city and our district has very little extra resources as we currently are in a budget crunch.
Our classroom is the smallest in the school. It is long and narrow like a hallway with built in cabinets that make the room even smaller. We are provided with long tables for the students to work on. There is no space for them to put their extra books, so they must squeeze them onto the table, or place them on the dirty floor. The desk can only face one direction because the room is very narrow. When writing on the board many of the students have difficulty seeing the board because of the position the tables must be in. Sharing space can be very distracting for the students who already struggle to focus with ADHD. Students with physical disabilities can not move freely around the classroom because of the large tables. Many of the students struggle with organization which is made harder by the cramped shared space.
If our room had individual desks for each student there would be less clutter. Students would be able to move freely around the room and see the board with ease. Organization and focus would improve because all students would have their own space. Learning time would increase because less time would be spent looking for missing work, trying to focus, no one would have to stop working to let the person sitting next to them go to the bathroom, all students would be able to move around the room easily and a greater number of student learning activities could be accomplished in the new found space.
Your donation with not only help my current classroom but will continue to help the many students I will have for the rest of my career. You will make a difference in the lives of many special education students who struggle to learn each day. Please help by making their learning environment a comfortable and disability friendly place.
