Do you remember how difficult it was to focus in class? Movement can help with this!
Studies show that 54 minutes of daily movement can help students.
I teach 2nd grade in a Japanese Immersion program. These students come from all over the city to learn Japanese. I only have 2 hours with them to teach Reading, Writing, Spelling, and Math. I would love to let them move more during our short time together.
Over my 20 years of teaching, I have seen more and more students have trouble focusing in class. I am always looking for new ways to help them. We already have wiggle seats, disks to sit on, and crates, but this would be a great addition that ALL students would be able to use.
My Project
Regular physical activity throughout the school day has been shown to reduce behavioral issues, improve social and emotional skills, and increase academic readiness and abilities.
Sitting all day is difficult for adults, it is even harder for kids!
We want to increase the daily movement to 54 minutes a day. The 54 minutes may include a combination of physical education, recess, school-wide activities and in-classroom activity. Our students have a 30 minute lunch recess, but we would like to increase their movement in the classroom also. These desk cycles will help our students get more physical activity while still learning.
