My students come from many different backgrounds and demographics. My class is titled, "Mrs. Weiss' World of Math" because math is connected to us in everything we do. Math is everywhere in the world around us, and by making it the theme of my classroom it reminds students every day to make real-world connections. In order to connect to the real-world, students need STEM tools.
We begin the school year by having students set goals.
They are not alone in achieving these goals and teachers are here to help them in any way possible. We explain to the students that we are a community and communities help others and work together. One way that we show students we work together is by raising money for charities such as Heifer. In today's fast-paced world, students need to learn using new and innovative ways to increase their curiosity.
I have made a project to get 5 desk cycles in my math and reading classroom to encourage flexible seating for my students. In 5th and 6th grade, it can be difficult to sit quietly and focus on a task. Studies have shown that students who have a hard time focusing will be more successful if they are moving.
The desk cycles will promote kinesthetic learning to increase focus and problem-solving.
It can be difficult to get students to concentrate on a math problem or to read a book, I believe that having the Desk Cycles will help solve this problem.
