My Students
Nearly 95% of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch, and many of my students experience challenges from living in a high-poverty community. However, my 21st-century students will have their basic needs met.
For my students, opting out is not an option.
They are always putting forth their best. The student population is very diverse. For instance, they all have different learning styles and interests, and some students are from outside of the U.S. They have a variety of experiences to contribute to the school and classroom community, and it is necessary to have the appropriate materials and items to meet the needs of every unique student.
My Project
One of the hardest questions that my students ask me is about the relevance of each text. It can be hard to see the relevance in books that aren't modern and require a lot of background knowledge. My students have expressed that they want to read books that they can see themselves in. I encourage my students to read a variety of literature, but the selections in this project specifically includes character(s) and/or situations that my students see in themselves or in their community.
I am 100% positive that these book selections will capture my students' interest to the point that they will not want to stop reading.
These books will draw the students in while they continue to build fluency, vocabulary, and literacy skills. It's so important that they have this opportunity because so often the students are reading text to prepare for standardized test and other assessments. The fulfillment of this project will give them the chance to explore and find what they love to read.
