My students need a printer to be able to design and produce 3D objects. This will help my students begin to understand the dynamics of design and production.
We work in a project-based learning environment where students work together in teams to produce rich media to complement their English and Social studies. Or mantra is Imagine Design Create taken from the book Autodesk gave to our class.
Our students are culturally diverse, highly motivated and curious.
They aren't afraid to take chances and fail. We employ a number of design processes that challenge students to continue questioning their ideas and solutions. They work together, are self reliant and able to listen and provide empathy to each other.
Our school is forward thinking and likes to try new technologies and learning platforms such as blended learning. Administration is supportive of our willingness to incorporate technology into the learning process in order to provide students with a self-directed learning pathway.
My Project
Being able to incorporate 3D printing into the rapid proto-typing process we have for design will give students a great tool for visualizing designs in 3D.
We have a five step design process. Sketching & Ideation, Plussing & Documentation, Prototyping, Fabrication and Exhibition. Students will incorporate use of the 3D printer for prototyping and fabrication.
The 3D printer could be used in our Young Makers program where students build projects to be exhibited at the annual MAKER FAIRE as well as at local exhibits such as the Marin County Fair.
Use of the 3D printer facilitates learning 3D design programs, understanding spatial relationships of objects, and begin the exploration of choosing materials and mediums for expression. Students learn how to make decisions, revise plans and share with the community.
Helping students understand and use 21st century tools in an environment where technology is accessible and available to all students is important to all of us.
Students learn valuable core craft skills to help them become productive contributing members of society. The community gains important members able to create solutions to the challenges of the future.
This donation helps make my classroom an equitable partner in the future by providing us with one of the emerging tools for creativity.
