Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students and families speak Spanish, Mam, Tongan, Arabic, Tagalog, Karen, Karenni, Nepali and Chinese. Since 45% of our students are English Language Learners, we have a rich academic program to meet their language needs. Our newcomer program serves up to forty students in our community who have moved here in the last year and speak little English. We also have a rich African American student population that thrives at our school.
Our students reflect the neighborhood's diverse immigrant and minority populations.
Throughout the year, we have cultural celebrations to celebrate the histories, cultures, and accomplishments of our diverse student population. While 96% of our students are socioeconomically disadvantaged, we are rich in so many ways.
My Project
Our students participate in our after-school program where they have an hour of academic homework time in a smaller class setting than day school. After academic hour, our students to go a their second block also known as their elective block. Here they might be on the soccer team, learn how to cook in cooking class or even create art and design through visual media and media arts!
In their media arts class, students have been designing new uniform logos and would like to create their own line of uniform shirts for our school (due to gang activity in the area, we have to have a uniform).
Through Donor's Choose, we were able to get a t-shirt press where student can take their designs and apply them to the shirts! Now we need a printer, ink and a computer (to download the software) to finish the project and start making the shirts!
By having students design the shirts, it boosts moral and since students have to wear the uniform, makes it more fun! It also helps the school save on costs by having to outsource for our designs - now our students get to pick and have a say!
