My students need hands-on science materials like a Wobbletop Shake Table, Global Challenge Project packs, safety goggles, and Kraft Sheets to explore and create solutions for environmental problems that are devastating communities around the world.
As the technology teacher at our school, I see students that are eager and excited about the possibilities that technology can offer. Our school is unique in that it only serves students in the 4th and 5th grades. I see all 450 students in my lab on a weekly basis. These students come to us from a variety of economic backgrounds. Of the 4th and 5th grade students that we serve, 46% are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.
Our location next to a military base offers a unique opportunity to serve students that have one or both parents serving in the military.
At any given time, our students are dealing with situations that are unique to military families, such as deployments.
Our population is not only varied in their economic backgrounds, they are also very diverse in their academic backgrounds. Of our 420 students, 34% currently hold IEPs or IAPs.
My Project
As a STEAM teacher, I am always introducing real-world problems for my students to research. But it doesn't stop there. I want the students to become part of the solution. Through the use of the story "A Long Walk to Water," Global Challenges Project-Based STEM kits, and test tubes, students will investigate different ways to filter water in order to make it safe for drinking. Students will use the requested chipboard to build earthquake proof houses that will be tested on the Rocking Wobbletop Shake Table.
In order to think globally, our students need science materials to research and create solutions for real problems that are devastating communities around the world, such as earthquakes, lack of clean drinking water, and renewable energy.
By investigating these problems and actually designing solutions for them, my hope is that our students will become more involved in community and global issues.
