I'm hoping to inspire my students with technology and connect it to mathematics. We'll take on blogging, Twitter, video editing, 3D printing, Skype, and much, much more! My fourth grade students come from a variety of backgrounds; 50 percent of my students live in high poverty areas, and about 15 percent of them are English Language Learners from South Africa, Vietnam, Nigeria, Bhutan, and other countries.
Our school is a K-5 Vermont school that loves embracing STEM activities.
We put tools into the hands of students to keep them energized. My students are an energetic and inspired group of learners who love utilizing technology.
My Project
My students need 2 windmills to work on understanding renewable energy sources. We want to experiment with different types of blades to determine which ones will be the most efficient and so they can be hands on with a generator. We learn about all different types of renewable energy sources, but a turbine/generator are very abstract concepts unless we could physically build and use them in the classroom. I want to create these windmills in the classroom and test the different types of blades and monitor how much energy is produced by each one. They can also see the magnets on the back being spun by the fan blade, as mechanical energy is being converted to electrical energy.
