Help me give my students a welcoming literary environment that promotes close reading, reading workshops, and writing workshops. We want to create a space that students can comfortably and authentically create and share their stories with one another.

My Students
The students in room at our school have powerful stories to share with our school and their community. They love reading and writing while having the ability to create in the classroom.
Our students come from low-income, high-crime areas in the Washington D.C area.
We enjoy empowering our students by teaching them how to effectively tell their stories through their writing. We work to strengthen their ability to look at the world through the lens of literature and how our collective experiences shape our identities as we move through the world.
Our students are preparing to enter their senior year. A year that is full of applications, fees, travel, and anxiety. We work to create a space where students can learn the fundamentals of reading and writing while incorporating opportunities to showcase their talents and skills. We also set out to create a space that fosters fun learning in a year that is surrounded by high expectations. By showing students how to effectively communicate their stories, we can empower students to take action within their communities and beyond, even under the highest of pressure.
My Project
While they come from these high stress and taxing situations at home, they enter our building to learn how to become better listeners, stronger students, problem solvers, and active participants in their communities. These items will allow us to create a welcoming space where students can tell their stories via writing workshops and learn from the stories that have already been told including books from Toni Morrison (Song of Solomon) and Alice Walker, (The Color Purple), stories by Maya Angelou, Junot Diaz, and poetry by Jericho Brown, and many others. By having these items available in our classroom, we can authentically create a learning environment that is both culturally responsive and joyful.
