Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the fortune of working with some very self-motivated students this year. Before teaching engineering courses, students had to keep up with me. Now the coin has flipped and I'm running as fast as I can to keep up with my kiddos. Their drive to keep improving their engineering projects amazes me. They do not look at a newly assigned project and sigh. They simply dive right in.
Our students have various challenges at our campus including but not limited to living in a low income area, learning English as a second language, and regularly moving schools being in a military family.
Being low income, they're used to not having what everyone else has, but I want to change that for them. Language barriers will not stop them from wanting to learn. Feeling that they are constantly moving from one new place to another will not stop them from chasing their dreams. Help me provide them with the materials they want to be successful.
My Project
In this curriculum, students are taught the engineering design process. They have the task of designing and modeling a playground for one of the local elementary schools. Students are able to design on paper and have access to a CAD program for creating their 3D models.
However, they also need to be able to test their structure to be sure it works efficiently and is safe to use.
We do have a 3D printer, but unfortunately we are short on PLA filiment. Using 3D models, students will be able to design, test, and revise their concepts to ensure the client is satisfied.
