Help me give my students the tools and supplies they need to integrate their engineering and design skills and knowledge of biomes to create an ecosystem museum for their families!
I am a first-year, third-grade teacher in a Title I school. Over 50% of the students in our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Our school community is highly diverse, with learners coming from many cultures and backgrounds.
My students are a creative, self-motivated, and problem-solving learning community.
The third graders at our school are a highly active, diverse group of learners. Incorporating kinesthetic learning and choices is instrumental in my students' learning. Many of my students are English Language Learners and will benefit greatly from increased visuals, group collaboration, and vocabulary enrichment.
My Project
Our school is located in a rural town in Kansas. Many of my students know little about the world outside of their community. In 3rd grade, we have an amazing opportunity to teach our scholars all about the world around them. Through this project, my students will be researching ecosystems across the globe. They will be learning about the cultures, wildlife, flora, and global issues that different biomes face. Students will be creating 3D models of the ecosystems they chose to research as well as writing presentations about their ecosystem for our huge parent engagement event!
This project will allow my students to create an interactive ecosystem museum in which they will invite parents and families to attend and have the opportunity to engage their families in learning!
I believe that bringing families into the classroom and allowing them to see what their students are doing at school helps to build essential connections between school and home. Students are always more motivated to learn and do their best work when they know their families are excited to see their learning.
This project is packed full of the craft supplies that are essential for my students to develop their 3D museum projects. Fake flora, sand/rocks, blue cellophane, cotton balls and more will be turned into various ecosystems as envisioned by my students. Clay and other materials will help my students to sculpt animals to inhabit their displays. Books will give my students the tools to research these places which are far from their own community.
