As a teacher who is a creative thinker, I want to instill that creativeness in my scholars. Every morning I greet each kiddo with "our class handshake" (that they created and voted on) and let them know they are valued and respected in my haven.
There are 650 students in K-5 are at our high performing elementary school.
Class sizes are large and continue to increase. There are 29 kids in my class. Even though I teach at a well performing school, there are a lot of pressures on scholars to succeed and "be perfect". Anxiety levels are high and the amount of stress my kids go through when they don't perform "well (perfect)" on a test, assignment, project breaks my heart.
My kids constantly ask me "is this good enough? what is my grade? will I still get into West Point if my grade is this? How will this affect my chances of getting into a great middle school, college, etc?"
My answer to them is "did you try your best? are you satisfied with your results? are you happy? what does it matter what I think, it matters what you think and believe?"
My Project
The flexible seating I am requesting are options my scholars would love to have in our classrooms. They would use the scoop chairs and lap desks during writing time. Who doesn't love to be comfortable while writing especially when they are becoming authors of their own novels? Stadium seating chairs and kid rockers would be used during reading time when my scholars are engrossed in their leveled readers or the sequel to Harry Potter or Auggie, the kid of kindness in Wonder. Stools and wobble seats are the seat of choice during small group rotations or during independent work. All in all, my kiddos would have the choice and flexible options to choose what seat is most comfortable and relaxing for their education. With the everyday stress and anxiety my kids endure, my classroom is their haven and second home!
