Our school is located in San Diego, California. We serve some 600 students in grades TK–5. Over half of our students are local residents, and the rest of our student population is enrolled through district's Voluntary Enrollment Exchange Program (VEEP) or School Choice program.
My students come to school ready for a challenge each day and have fallen in love with programming.
Learning to code helps to grow more than their programming skills but also requires them to think critically and problem solve each step of the way. We work in collaborative groups to help them see the importance of a collection of thoughtful minds.
My Project
Our class is ready for the hands on programming experience that LEGO Mindstorm provides. This will allow students to see an real life application of their programming skills. They have participated in Hour of Code online, and have learned basic coding skills using Ozobots. They are ready for the next step! LEGO Mindstorms will provide a challenging next step to further develop their programming skills.
Using robotics, such as LEGO Mindstorms Systems, in a hands-on classroom environment, helps to promote various skills that are useful preparation for future careers in science, mathematics and engineering.
This curriculum crosses over into the science, physics, engineering and computer programming programs at the middle school level. There are no consumable resources involved with this project except the batteries. Another ongoing benefit is the unforgettable experience the students will take with them once they have completed this program.
