Design and Hands-on Activities for Emotional Needs
My students need building sets to be used as calm down stations or as rewards for positive behavior during learning time. These sets, many of which will be a multi-day project, will motivate student behavior.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Of the 429 students at our PreK-5 school, 88.1% of the students are Latino, 78.6% are designated as English Learners, 81.6% are socioeconomically disadvantaged, and 21.7% are students with a disability. Many students come from households which have experienced some form of trauma; A violent crime, deportation of a loved one, or severe poverty are things which the children and families of our school deal with. This makes working with my student population tough sometimes. Many teachers use my classroom as a break or reward for students who need behavioral support.
These students have the highest needs and often require a break from learning or other peers.
In my class, I have been giving guest students a building task, such as putting together a Ferris wheel out of K'NEX or building a challenging lego set. These projects are stored in my room and kept for when the students return. It has had a positive effect on student behavior, but I am running out of building sets and require more.
My Project
These building materials will make a difference in students lives because they will have a chance to de-escalate their behavior by working on a project that will result in a physical achievement. The LEGOs and K'NEX models will be used by the students. They will build them when they visit my class as a reward or as a cool down from their homeroom class. For students who come to work on the project as an incentive, it will push them to be better students during a lesson so that they can have this rewarding time.
The students with the most behavior needs will have a way to regulate their feelings through a hands-on activity.
Often in the past, when students have come to my class for a break or a reward, they work quietly and respectfully on a project. My classroom becomes a place that they want to visit daily. Having enough of these building kits will allow for multiple positive experiences.
