My second and fifth graders are Super Scientists and outstanding scholars. Our teachers and faculty are dedicated to helping young scholars feel loved and safe. Our suburban school is in Northern California and an increasing number of our students qualify for a free lunch. We are a diverse school, serving scholars of various socio-economic and ethnic diversity as well as levels of academic achievement backgrounds. Our District's mission is for each student to graduate with the skills needed to contribute and thrive in a changing world. My Super Scientists are special. They enter the science lab with curiosity and explosive ENERGY to learn science through hands-on labs, collecting evidence, and writing about science in science notebooks. My students' imagination runs wild when it comes to constructing explanations and designing models.
Effective teaching and learning of science involve seeing, handling, and manipulating real objects and materials.
The materials in this proposal will inspire student learning in the science lab in a fun hands-on and interactive way to build on curiosity and understanding of science concepts through art and discovery.
My Project
The essence of art and science is discovery! Integrating science and visual art provides my young scientists an opportunity to think, discover, and make connections to the nature world.
Today's science assessments are based on demonstrating understanding through modeling, sketching, drawing and engineering.
A drying rack will enhance the science lab by giving my students a safe place to dry their amazing projects. My students use recycled products, clay, colorful paper, craft items and lots of glue and paint to make their models. Currently, we place wet models and projects around the classroom and carefully walk around them. In fifth grade, students discover that organisms are related in food webs in which some animals eat plants for food and other animals eat the animals that eat plants. Discovering what owls eat will be the perfect hands-on activity to understand this concept. The items in this proposal, if funded, will help my students discover food webs and protect all student models and keep our science lab clean, organized, and full of creative and engaging discovery!
