Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year, my 8th grade students and I will be embarking on a U.S. History learning expedition investigating the following guiding questions.
1.What does it mean to be independent and free?
2.How do you know if a government/
institution is democratic?
3.How does a democratic government deal with conflicts/ disagreements when creating and implementing their government?
In order to make this learning expedition relevant to my students, we will be creating our own student government. My first year with these students revealed that, like most youth their age, they are craving independence, but need guidance discovering the connection between activism, responsibility, and freedom. We will be using both America's democratic development along with the rich current event of Iraq's drafting of their constitution to help us grapple with issues that face any group of people attempting to create and implement a democratic government.
While we create this government, we hope to film our reflections and interview other students at our school. We plan to add this commentary to footage from our classroom work in order to produce a documentary of our project. We hope that this documentary will serve as an exemplar and inspiration to other youth interested in making their schools more democratic. In order to complete this documentary, we will need a digital video camera and film.
We look forward to also documenting this project with still images for the DonorsChoose organization and would love to add a DVD copy of our final product to any donor interested in sponsoring our project.
