This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember the first time you were able to explore science concepts in depth with a book? Right now many of my fifth grader students are excited about science but reading is frustrating to them because we don't have books tailored to our science concepts.
I work at a high poverty school in an urban area of North Carolina.
Nearly all of our fifth grade students are reading below grade level which makes it harder for them to fully understand the complex vocabulary that is presented to them in science. In order to catch our students up by the end of the year, we have a lot of work to do! It will be through the literacy reinforcement in science that we will see the growth in them academically. I am excited about getting our students to grade level proficiency because we know that if we catch them up now, they'll have a more successful school career.
My Project
I am requesting a collection of Delta Science Content Readers for my fifth grade students. We currently have none, not one, leveled science books in my classroom. This makes it hard for me as a teacher to bring the science content to life and to solidify their literacy comprehension skills so that our students are able to get excited about reading. We need more choice so that they want to read. We need the level that most of them are currently working towards and the level that we hope they all reach before the end of the year. The most important part of a scientific literacy classroom is an expansive classroom library and we are hoping to create that!
This project is important because we want our fifth grade students to love reading and to love science even more!
It we hook them into the world of reading in science now, then they will have no trouble once they reach middle and high school. We want to show our students how important reading is by providing them with a plethora of books.
