Help me give my students an opportunity to enjoy an experience that they may not normally have: seeing a current movie at a theatre in a nearby shopping center.
Seventh grade students are at that tough "tween" age, coming from being a youngster where everything is monitored by their parents, to becoming a young adult where they must be responsible for their own learning. In middle school, we are attempting to bridge that gap by giving them some of both worlds; allowing them to make their own decisions yet monitoring their progress to catch those who may struggle with the responsibility. We would like to reward them at the end of the year with a fun experience that they might not normally have with their family.
This middle school is a wonderful blend of students who have grown up in Hawaii their entire life with those who have moved here recently due to being in the military or other reasons.
My Project
Students at our school may not ever have the opportunity to go to a deluxe movie theatre with their families. This field trip to see a current movie with their classmates will be a day to remember. This will be a great way to celebrate the end of their first year in middle school.
The students will start with a math project.
Students will check the menu at the movie theatre, which offers more than your average theatre. It is more like a restaurant with many options.
Students will create a budget, perhaps with a friend and determine their costs including tax and how much money they need to bring. They have already begun saving for their snacks.
