This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are the largest High School in the district with over 1,500 students. 77.8% of our students and their households have reported as being economically disadvantaged. Out of the 77.8% (approximately 1,000 students) of students that are coming from low income households, only 43 students have reported being homeless. Those 43 students are eligible for different programs that assist students and families with housing, school supplies, transportation, etc. The rest of the students have to rely on their families, the staff at our school and other community agencies for help with meeting their needs.
We have so many wonderful students that come to school everyday and still struggle because they have limited access to basic necessities.
The adults in our building do their best to help the students that are in need, but there are only so many resources available to us. We can use all the help we can get to provide our students with the hygiene supplies that would make their lives a little less stressful.
My Project
Students are more willing to come to school and stay in school when their hygienic needs have been met. High School can be a difficult time for students for numerous reasons, but not having the means to take care of their bodies should not be one. The majority of our students come from low income households, however, they don't all qualify for services that provide monetary assistance or the supplies they need to feel good about themselves. We want the young people at our school to be healthy and to feel confident in their physical presentation. By helping us provide these products, donors will also be giving students the confidence to perform better in school. As much as we want to be able to help all students, we don't have the funding to do so. I have requested many basics like toothbrushes, soap, and shampoos. Thank you for supporting our school community!
