My students are second-graders in a small, suburban school. My school serves kindergarten through fifth-grade students. Approximately one-third of the students are English language learners. A high percentage of the students qualify for free breakfast and lunch, and many of them receive free backpack food for weekends from a special program.
My students are active learners who are eager to expand their knowledge and practice new skills.
They learn best when concepts are taught in multiple ways. This helps them better understand abstract ideas. They are deep thinkers and love coming to school and learning new things each day. My students are good at problem-solving, do not give up, and love a challenge.
My Project
Whole Phonics books are colorful, a bit silly, and just plain fun to read. My students like the adventures of multicultural characters and their animal friends while learning critical phonics skills and experiencing the joy of reading. These books are carefully crafted to sequentially instill language and reading skills over consecutive levels of learning.
Decodable books align with explicit, systematic phonics instruction.
They are simple stories consisting of words that are phonetically decodable. They use letters and letter groups that students have learned in previous phonics lessons.
Decodable books support all students, allowing them to focus closely on the sounds in words. This discourages students from guessing at unknown words and relying too heavily on pictures.
My students need decodable books so they can practice reading phonics patterns in text. Decodable books, written with a focus on a particular phonetic pattern or word family, can help students increase their fluency and automaticity of reading words. I plan to use decodable readers in a small group setting to teach my students to decode words with specific phonics patterns.
The repeated readings of decodable books help readers recognize words with phonics patterns and read those words fluently.
