My Students
My students are excited to be at school and are eager to learn. They are from a small rural community in Texas, which is known for its agriculture and provides many hard-working families with jobs. About 85 percent of my students are from low-income families. We have a high population of ESL students, and many of their families do not speak English at home. Therefore, their vocabulary is limited. Despite the language barrier, our students work hard and have made great gains in their reading. Our school provides a safe and positive environment that encourages students to do their best and develop a love for reading. The elementary school has about 400 students from PreK to 3rd grade.
My Project
Every day my students have time to read their library books independently. They have a real love for reading that has enabled them to continually advance in their reading levels. As the books become more challenging, students need to be able to look up new words in the dictionary.
Electronic dictionaries are a quick and reliable way for students to develop their vocabulary and word knowledge.
Although we do teach dictionary skills, looking up a word can take a third grader a very long time. If a student looks up a word online, you never know what might pop up in their search. Electronic dictionaries can make finding unknown words as easy as a push of the button.
