Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Dictionaries are a vital part of any English class. Vocabulary is crucial to reading and writing and dictionaries will help our students learn academic vocabulary. 40 % of my students are English Language Learners. It can be extremely difficult for them to understand what they are reading.
Our charter school is 85% Latino and there are many English language learners.
It has been very difficult to find good novels that my students can relate to and connect with. "The House on Mango Street" will motivate my students to read and will serve as a good example for my students. Many of my students are two to three grade levels behind in reading and having dictionaries will really help them understand the vocabulary and what they are reading. Our students try so hard and really want to learn but they need the tools that will help them succeed.
My Project
Currently I have three dictionaries and one thesaurus in my classroom. When my students are doing their vocabulary journals they all have to take turns using the three dictionaries in my classroom. This can lead to a huge chunk of our class time being wasted. Good academic dictionaries are too expensive for me to purchase a class set and too expensive to ask my parents to purchase them so I am asking for help. Dictionaries are the missing link to my students’ academic success.
The novels will allow us to read something together and these specific novels will inspire my students. "The House on Mango Street" is a novel that our parents have requested and I hope this can bring our parents into our students' academic lives.
The dictionaries greatly help our students better understand the novel.
Your contribution will greatly contribute to the success of my students as readers and writers!
Additionally, any contribution that you provide will help endless amounts of students year after year. We thank you, in advance, for helping our students connect to literature and truly understand what they are reading.
