Kindergarten is such an exciting age group. They love to come to school everyday and they love learning! This eagerness is one the main reasons why kindergartners have the opportunity to make such amazing growth over the course of the school year. Many students come in knowing a limited number of letters and sounds, but by the end of the year they are reading and writing.
Learning comes to life with hands-on opportunities.
I provide learning that connects students to each other, our school, our community, and our world. Alongside our academics, we spend time learning how to regulate our own emotions, how to be a friend to others, and how to work together as a community. Our class is more than just a classroom, we are a group of people preparing to become productive citizens for our future.
My Project
I have seen first hand the amazing learning that happens when students have Montessori materials in their hands. I am a certified Montessori teacher in addition to my education degree. I merge a Montessori approach in my public school classroom. Young learners understand concepts at a deeper level when they are provided materials to use with their hands. Students are more successful in learning their letters and sounds when they use their fingers to trace sand paper letters and hands to sort real life-like objects. I am excited to give students reading cubes to practice making and reading CVC (short vowel) words and CVCE (long vowel) words.
Students learn to respect materials and each others work space when they use Montessori rugs to designate their work area.
Learning to respect each other and the environment are important life skills that are taught in a Montessori environment and in my classroom. In addition to our rugs and language arts materials, adding wooden number cards to our math instruction can provide a basic understanding of a number and even advance learning for those students who are ready to work with larger numbers. Learning the teen numbers is a big part of kindergarten. I can't wait to see my students using the Teen Bead hanger to see how a golden ten bead in front of a single number makes a teen number.
