Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students are at-risk and economically disadvantaged; many of them come from Mexico and Central America. Southeast Houston is an area strife with gangs and poverty, so reaching my students is of utmost importance. Most of them have known only violence and hunger, so the classroom is the safe place to introduce them to the world of knowledge and opportunity that's out there. Despite the challenges, my students strive to improve the place they now call home, and they are empathetic, compassionate young people. Frequently, I observe my students sharing what they have with one another, whether it is meals or translating language to another student who struggles to read. It is an honor for me to teach the students, and a delight to learn from them even as I teach them.

My Project

Many of my students come from low income homes, so books in print are difficult to obtain. Having accessibility to books in print every day in the classroom will help foster a joy of reading as we read together both silently and aloud, individually and as a group. There is something to having the text in hand and readily available during classroom discussions.

The classic books requested will help my students develop analytical and critical thinking skills, which they will need in their lives beyond the classroom, as they discuss and write about themes, structures, patterns, and textual organization.
