My class consists of amazing 4th and 5th grade students from a Title I school (low-income families) who receive special education and related services. Although they require special accommodations and extra support to thrive along with their regular peers, they are very capable and enthusiastic to learn, grow and achieve their full potentials.
Learning to read is essential for students to eventually be able to read to learn. Most of my students, although in upper grades, are still working on their decoding and fluency which in turn impacts their overall comprehension of texts.
Decodable books will allow my students to have the feeling of pride by being able to read a book that aligns with phonics rules that they've been exposed to.
This is a good way to build their confidence as they work towards becoming fluent readers.
Having an actual book (appropriate to their level) in their hands that they can read through, page after page, is far more fulfilling, especially with beginning readers instead of going through a typical list of words or flash cards.
