This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am fortunate to teach 12 wonderful students in a low-income, Title I school district. My students are not only from low SES homes but also have varying disabilities which can make learning new skills and working independently difficult.
My students are funny, kind, and persevere through all challenges.
It is my mission to provide each student with individualized, targeted instruction to support his or her growth. My students are truly amazing and I want to be able to give them the support they need to be the best that they can be!
My Project
All of my students are struggling readers. They see their friends starting to read chapter books and they feel self-conscience because they can't. They may pick up a typical chapter book but typically feel overwhelmed; the font is too small, the pages may be crowed, and many of the words may not be easily decodable.
All children can love to read, they just need the right books - I want to give my students the self-confidence to start reading chapter books without frustration.
My students need decodable books so they can practice reading phonics patterns in text. Decodable books are written with a focus on a particular phonetic patterns or word families. Students can use decodable books to increase their fluency and automaticity of reading words. I plan to use decodable readers in a small group setting. Students will be able to read books in the classroom and also read books at home sharing their growth and love of reading building the school to home connection.
