My Students

I teach 1st grade in a working-class, suburban neighborhood. I have 22 students, 9 girls, and 13 boys. Many students in my class have high needs that require an IEP or 504. Due to this, our instruction needs to be specially designed to meet the needs of all students. Our students love to draw, dance, and be silly! They come in each day ready and willing to learn!

My Project

During a professional development day, I was talking to a kindergarten teacher about the way we teach our kids to read. We came to the conclusion that many of our students reply on a guessing game when it comes to reading. They are heavily relying on the pictures to figure out the words. We realized that our students often are not even paying much attention to the words on the page. After doing extensive research, we found that decodable books highly benefit the learning of young readers. We want to reinvent the way we do guided reading to directly reflect what we are teaching and have taught already in our phonics lesson. These books match up nicely with our phonics curriculum and would help the students be able to apply the phonics skills to everyday reading.
