My Students

My students are compassionate, hard-working, and ambitious! My students come from a community with high rates of poverty whose families will not be able to help support them in paying for college. They often will go above and beyond to make their community a better place like organizing a food truck for families within the community in need.

Most of my students will also be the first in their family to pursue any form of education after high school.

A college degree can make a HUGE difference in their lives and help improve the overall well being of the community!

They have been working hard all year towards going to college. We've had college rep visits, campus tours, one-on-one meetings, and classroom activities to help them get ready. However, as financial aid letters are sent out my student become more hesitant looking at the high cost of tuition and supplies. They've worked hard all year and now it's time to build excitement and momentum about attending college!

My Project

Decision Day is an annual event that celebrates our students who are taking the first step to attaining a post-secondary degree! Coming from a school district that has a large population of first-generation students, this event is a culmination of everything they have been doing all year like filing the FAFSA, completing college applications, and applying for scholarships. Not only does it celebrate the hard work of our seniors it also sets an expectation for younger students, which increases the college-going culture at the school. Seniors wear color-coordinated shirts based on the school they are attending and they also sign a mock letter of intent in front of a Decision Day banner, making it a special experience similar to what an athlete might feel when they commit to a school.

These college essentials will ensure that our seniors have all the materials they need to earn their degree!

Most of the time, our students' financial aid only applies to tuition and maybe housing, but they have trouble affording the supplies they need to earn their credential. We want them to have some of those issues already resolved so that they will be more likely to remain in college and finish their degree.
