Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The senior class consists of about 170 students from diverse backgrounds. More than 65% of our students receive free or reduced lunch, take care of younger siblings, and/or work part-time to pay for food, clothing, and rent.
Despite these challenges, they dream of attending colleges, and for most, they will be the first in their family.
My students have made a commitment to pursue their post-secondary goals by applying to a variety of institutions in order to grow both personally and academically. Over the past several months 80% of our students have submitted their college applications
My Project
This year, I am organizing an annual College Decision Day for graduating seniors at Ernest McBride High School. During this event, I will be celebrating all of my seniors who will be continuing their education at a 4-year or 2-year college, trade school, or military.
Most of my students come from low-income backgrounds and so accessing items such as school supplies or tablets is often very difficult, so we want to make sure they have the essential tools necessary to succeed as they transition into college.
The materials I am requesting will be given to students at an event to celebrate the seniors' post-secondary plans. During this event, I hope to give away materials to as many students as possible to reward them for their hard work and ensure their success after high school. Many of the students and their families worry about paying for college, and these items can potentially reduce stress and financial concerns. With your donation, these students will be able to go off to a world of infinite possibilities worry-free.
