Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in an urban high school that is defined by poverty. Like Willy Loman, the students think little about the future with respect to their finances. In order to prepare for college- and, in fact, figure out how they will financially be able to afford college - students need to master financial literacy. This is a subject that is not really addressed in high school, but I plan to do it in conjunction with teaching Death of a Salesman. While reading this play, students will see the mistakes that Willy Loman made, and they will use Suze Orman's 2009 Action Plan to help them understand what they need to do in order to afford college and have financially secure futures.
Over 65% of my students receive free or reduced lunch, meaning they are at or below the poverty level. Yet they are the immediate gratification generation - kids that spend money they don't have and who don't think about their financial futures. High schools today are concerned with standardized testing, and they no longer teach students budgeting or saving. It is so important that this generation learns financial literacy, especially in these dire economic times!
With Suze Orman's 2009 Action Plan, students will learn how to handle their money, pay for college, and stay out of credit card debt-a problem that plagues so many young people. With the credit crunch, the stock market freefall, the staggering toll of home foreclosures and job losses, the economic crisis that struck in 2008 has left no one untouched and everybody reeling. Students need to learn about saving and how to keep their savings safe. They need to learn the fundamentals of investing and how to plan for the future. Suze is our nation's go-to expert on financial matters, and she believes that 2009 is a critical year for our money. She will teach my students - and they can teach their families - safeguards to put in place, actions to take, costly mistakes to avoid, and even opportunities to be had, so that they are protected during the bad times and prepared to prosper when things take a turn for the better. No matter what situation they are in, students will see that Suze Orman's 2009 ACTION PLAN delivers honest, straightforward guidance-what to do, when to do it, and how to do it-as only Suze Orman can. My students need this book.
Providing my students with Suze Orman's 2009 Action Plan will be an investment in their futures. The book will help them plan for paying for college, while at the same time helping them plan for the financial futures. Educating and empowering this generation will assure that they will never be the Willy Lomans of the future!
