My Students

My diverse classroom is composed primarily of English Language Learners in a high poverty area. My students come from different academic, linguistic, and sociocultural backgrounds. They are eager learners who need time, understanding, and a friendly environment that gives them the security and opportunity to discover themselves and their world.

Most of my students start 2nd Grade without knowing how to read or write.

Our school does not have a library, so it is in the classroom that students have the opportunity to read and listen to stories, to learn about their world and to discover how much they can do for the future.

My Project

These books will offer my students the opportunity to read independently about what they are learning. Throughout the year, my students work on different projects. These projects reflect most of the 2nd grade curriculum themes: character, space, animals, plants, biographies, and rocks. I created a series of investigative projects to give students the chance to experience research in a meaningful and engaging way. The projects allow students to read nonfiction books to respond and reflect on important social studies and science concepts.

My students love to work on research projects because they can collaborate with friends, read high interest books and reflect on ideas about their world.

This way, students have the opportunity to express their learning through presentations, diagrams, posters, discourse, writing, and/or illustrations. It is a way that I can provide my students with the experience of interacting with text in a fun and enriching way. And also prepare them for a college career.

By reading nonfiction books and completing research projects students are able to keep track of their learning through our lessons and their individual findings while reading books. It allows students the autonomy to work on their own pace and build active knowledge.
