My school is a Title I school and receives federal aid to help us meet the needs of our students, but it is not enough. In addition, our students come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. Our school has approximately 2,000 students with an average of over 700 students per grade. Hard to believe, right?
My students are amazing and diverse in their learning capabilities and I love exposing them to new ideas.
I have the pleasure to teach such a wide range of pupils that are gifted and talented students, English as a New Language students, as well as students who receive special education services and are learning disabled and need many accommodations in order to be successful. Many of them are reluctant readers and struggle to find books that they like to read.
.
My Project
As an English Language Arts teacher, it is often difficult to find books that my students are both interested in and can relate to. 35 copies of Dear Martin will allow my students to have their own copy of this novel to read both in class and at home to engage them in a story that is culturally relevant and will make them interested in reading.
Every day I do my best to give my students access to every opportunity available to them; through reading, I can give my students the world.
Many of my students are so poor they cannot afford to buy books of their own. By opening their minds through reading a book that they can relate to, I can engage my students in classroom discussions that they will want to participate in. This book will also let them know that there are others in the world that have similar experiences to them, all while they are learning reading skills and strategies to become better readers and writers.
Please help me instill a love for reading in my students by helping us get this book!
