Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an On Track for Success teacher, which is a pilot program in my district. I work in a small therapeutic intervention classroom for students in K-2 who are experiencing significant social and emotional difficulty in their typical classroom. The goal is to teach the children strategies to help them become successful. Students are assigned to different time slots of the day to receive intense small group instruction in academics, communication skills as well as social and emotional support.
The On Track for Success pilot program takes place in a large urban school that serves students K-5.
The school has approximately 600 students from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds.
My Project
My classroom is a therapeutic classroom for children who have experienced trauma. These children are learning how to regulate their emotions as well as their behaviors.
These books help start a conversation about these feelings as well as come up with strategies to help handle them in the future.
It is much easier to start the discussion about feelings when it is a character in a book and then lead the children to relate it to their lives.
I particularly like the Dealing with Feelings series because they summarize different strategies that can be used at the end of the book. After reading, the children create a page for their feelings book and add a strategy or two that they think would help them. So, if the children are having a difficult time coming up with one they can always refer back to the book.
