My students need a LEGO Boost Creative Toolbox as well as other STEM and STEAM related materials in order to meet our districts' STEM curriculum goals.
All of my students are superheroes with unique abilities because they are all considered deaf or hard-of-hearing. Teaching them new concepts and helping them reach their highest potential is both incredibly rewarding and challenging at the same time due to their many different needs.
Majority of these students are of lower socio-economic status, and due to their limited access to both spoken English and sign language at home, these students require instruction that is both visual and hands-on.
The elementary school they are at is the only one in three counties that serves students within the Regional Day School Program for the Deaf, as such many of my students can spend upwards of 45 minutes on the bus. My students do not view themselves as different, and it is my goal to keep it that way.
My Project
Science and Technology is an always changing and growing field. There will be numerous job opportunities for individuals with science and coding skills. The materials I have selected will give my students a beginning foundation in these areas of interest that match my districts goal of implementing more dedicated STEM time throughout the school year.
I am requesting these materials to begin preparing and planting the seeds of interest in these fields for my students' future.
LEGO Boost Creativity Toolbox will be used to start teaching, beginning engineering and computer coding skills. Sphero SPRK + STEAM robot will give students different hands-on computer programming opportunities. The Think & Learn Code-a-Pillar with Extensions will help younger students work on foundational programming skills.
All of the above-mentioned materials will be used to encourage growth in their problem-solving and cooperation skills. It will also aid in their ability to think outside of the box when presented with different problems to solve.
